Success rates for IVF are very dependent on many factors including:
- Age
- Weight
- Are you a Smoker/Non-smoker
- If you have been pregnant before
- The quality of both you and your partners reproductive organs
- State of mind
&
- The IVF clinic
Age Women’s age is statistically connected with their fertility. The prime time for a woman to conceive is between 25-29 years of age. There is a steady decline in the probability to conceive between 31-38yrs. And even a steeper drop in likelihood to conceive between 39-45yrs+.
Smoking Whether it is one or both of you, cigarette and or marijuana smoking reduces your chance of success to ‘fall pregnant’. Fortunately this crisis can be resolved rather quickly by simply quitting. Quitting smoking is the easiest individual approach to increasing your chances to getting pregnant from IVF.
Being pregnant Having conceived previously (either on or off treatment) increases the chances that you will be successfully conceive again. Some women do not develop follicles in response to the medications, and others do, for reasons that aren't entirely understood.
Quality Male Organs Partners sperm quality is important to the overall IVF success rate. Motility of sperm (how well they move) is very important in predicting success.
Quality Female Organs Women with 2 normal fallopian tubes have higher success rates than women with only one functional tube. Women who have both tubes absent or blocked have very low success rates.
Body Weight Health conditions of you and your partner is also important in the IVF procedure success rate. In particular women who are over or underweight have a lower chance of pregnancy going full-term both with treatment and without. It is highly recommended to deal with this issue with your weight before undertaking IVF treatment.
State of Mind Mental health should be regarded as important as the physical state when undergoing IVF treatment. Positive state of mind is important to be successful with the IVF program(s). When one round of treatment is unsuccessful, it is easy to give up all hope and lose sight of your family goals. It is not uncommon to complete 1-3 treatments before conception is achieved.
The quality of IVF clinics The choice of IVF clinic can impact on your IVF success rate as not all clinics operate with the same products, protocols, planning and environments consequently there can be slight variation with their ‘result reproducibility’. As a result it can be evidently tricky to choose the best IVF clinic (even with a scientific background) that you feel will give you the best chance to conceive a child. One of the easiest options is to choose a recommended clinic or one with a long and proven track record. But how can you really be sure about their quality of science when understanding their procedures is already hard enough. Leading IVF clinics should have a code of ethics they follow along with good laboratory management controls in place. Asking these questions from your IVF specialist in your first meeting is highly advised.
